Her vision and motivation is for mothers and babies to thrive from their very first moments together.

She writes about childbirth, postpartum and breastfeeding.
After the birth of her children, Leah realized the power and wisdom that we all have within us ready to be released. Those experiences awakened a passion for her to assist women and families in any way she could. She wholeheartedly believes that women should have access to non-judgmental support and to know their options as a means to make the best decision for herself and her family during the childbearing years.
Leah began her self-studying for all things birth related in 2009 and at the end of 2014 trained with Birth Arts International to become a birth doula. February of 2015 Leah became certified in Rebozo and attended a Spinning Babies workshop April of 2015. May of 2015, she created the ICAN of Fredericksburg chapter to help increase awareness and promote education for cesarean and VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) births. In September 2015, Leah attended the Postpartum Support Virginia’s workshop for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. She and 2 other women began a peer support group in Stafford and Fredericksburg for women who are experiencing a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder. Towards the end of 2015 Leah became BLS (Basic Life Support) certified as a means to begin assisting Becky Banks, CPM, as her midwife assistant. Becoming a doula and a midwife assistant is a stepping stone to eventually becoming a midwife in the years to come.
To date Leah’s greatest accomplishments have been starting her business to turn her passion into a reality. Also, opening an ICAN chapter and creating a safe environment for women to come to should they be experiencing an anxiety or mood disorder. Leah has lived in Virginia most of her life. She has been married to her husband for 6 years now and together they have 3 sons and 1 fur baby, their dog Abbie. She is an avid book reader and loves to do just about anything outdoors, including spending time caring for her garden and hiking.
Experiencing midwifery care with my first two daughters set me on the path to birth work, first as a birth and postpartum doula and eventually as a Certified Professional Midwife. In 2007, I began attending births as a doula, and by 2010, was actively apprenticing with a busy homebirth practice. I had the privilege of working with several licensed midwives and finally earned my CPM in 2014. In that time I also co-facilitated the Fredericksburg Family Childbirth Circle with Leah Paul and Dr. Meggen Briscoe, taught childbirth classes, and volunteered as a doula with a women’s shelter. I maintain certifications in Infant and Adult CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation.
Most importantly, I am the mother of three daughters and a son, all born with midwives, the last three at home. A very patient husband and various spoiled fur babies also share our household.
Stephanie is a wife, mother of three, and blogger at The Mom In Black. A Navy transplant to Virginia at age sixteen, she is, for all intents and purposes, a Fredericksburg native and a pillar in the community. Just kidding. But, you can find her quite frequently haunting the chip aisle of the SuperTarget or rolling her eyes at the car in front of her in the Sonic drive thru. When she is not shuttling her oldest to school or tweeting from the bathroom, she enjoys watching DVR’ed episodes of shows her husband would never watch and perfecting her winged liner sweep.
As a blogger and humor-lover, Stephanie’s children keep the idea tank brimming with post ideas. Named one of VoiceBoks’ Hilariously Funny Parent Bloggers of 2014, Steph enjoys finding the “funny” in the not-so-funny tasks of everyday parenting. If you ever feel like you’re the only one, chances are you’re not. And that Stephanie has already made fun of herself in a blog post about it.
